Why Are “Vacuously True” Statements True?

By definition, implications are true if both the antecedent and consequent are true or the antecedent is false. In the latter case, we say that the implication is “vacuously” true. One might wonder why we don’t just call it false. This lecture shows that such a definition leads to problems with biconditionals.
